On 12 June 2026, Google rolled out a new feature within AI Mode: so-called information agents. These AI agents continuously search the web — news, blogs, social media, financial data — and proactively send you a summary as soon as something changes on a topic you have specified. You no longer have to search yourself; the search engine searches for you.
The feature is now available to Google AI Ultra subscribers. You activate it simply by typing something like “keep me updated on…” or “alert me when…” in AI Mode. Google has announced that the feature will also become available to AI Pro subscribers later this year.
What changes for your visibility?
This is more than a handy feature for consumers. It has direct consequences for how people — and soon businesses too — find information.
Where someone used to type in a search query ten times a day themselves, an agent can now do that automatically and summarise the results. That means:
- Fewer individual searches, more automated monitoring
- The AI chooses which sources it mentions in its summary — not the user
- Traditional clicks to your website may decline further
Research already shows that the overlap between classic search results and what AI Mode cites has dropped from around 76% (mid-2025) to sometimes less than 20% in early 2026. Ranking number one in Google therefore no longer guarantees that the AI will mention you too.
What does this mean for you?
As an SME owner, you need to ask yourself: are my content and my business being cited by AI agents, or am I being skipped?
A few concrete steps:
- Write for the AI, not just for the human. Clear, factual content with a clear structure is more often picked up as a source.
- Use structured data. Schema markup helps Google understand who you are and what you do.
- Build authority on your topic. AI agents more often cite sources that write consistently about a niche than sites that do a bit of everything.
The search experience is shifting from “search and click” to “ask and wait for an update”. Those who invest in GEO — Generative Engine Optimization — now lay the foundation for visibility in this new era.
